Step 1: What's the idea? Getting crystal clear about what you do, the gap you fill, the unique selling proposition and the "why" someone would buy from you, is critical, otherwise you compete with everyone else on the same level, more often based around price. You don't want that. You want someone buying from you, because you're different!
Step 2: The brand, logo, design and message might not be everything, but tell that to Apple, Coke Cola and Porsche. It is. The more you stand out, the easier it is to find you and the more memorable you are, the better.
Step 3: You've got to have a plan. Without it, how can you possibly know where you're going? The business, financial and marketing plans, even one pager's, give you direction, a strategy and hold you accountable.
Step 4: The profile, as I like to call it, is the billboard of your business. Online, offline, the marketing and the connections. If there's nothing to see or hear, they just wont buy!
Step 5: Start selling! Fundamental sales and service skills is paramount. The ability to interest a prospective client, convert them and then retain that client, is the real way that businesses grow.
